Why Add Page Numbers to a PDF?
Numbered pages keep readers oriented and make printed documents easy to reference.
- Give contracts and legal documents a professional, official look that is easy to cite.
- Keep multi-chapter reports in order so nobody loses their place while reading.
- Help reviewers and clients reference specific pages in long submissions.
- Prepare print-ready documents where page numbers are part of the required format.
How to Add Page Numbers
Step 1: Upload Your PDF
Drag and drop your PDF into the upload area or click to browse. You can add numbers to one document or several at once, and files up to 100MB are supported.
Tip: if a title page should have no visible number, upload a copy with that page removed, or set the starting number so the count still works out.
Step 2: Choose Position and Format
Pick a position from the six-position grid (top or bottom, left, center, or right), then choose a format such as 1, 2, 3 or 01, 02, 03. Set the starting number, font size, margin, and add a prefix or suffix such as a dash.
Step 3: Add Numbers and Download
Click Add Page Numbers. PDFit draws the numbers onto every page and downloads the numbered file right away. If you processed several PDFs, they arrive together in a ZIP file.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum PDF file size I can number?
You can process PDFs up to 100MB per file. Larger documents work too if you compress them first.
Are my files uploaded to a server, or is everything private?
Everything runs locally in your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device and nothing is stored, so confidential documents stay private.
Can I add page numbers on my phone or tablet?
Yes. The tool works in any modern mobile browser, so you can number documents on a smartphone or tablet without installing anything.
Is this tool free, and do I need an account?
It is completely free. No account, no login, no watermark, and no hidden fees, just upload and download.
Does adding numbers change the content of my PDF?
No. The tool only draws the number text on each page. Your original text, images, and layout stay exactly the same.
Which positions can I choose for the numbers?
There are six positions in a grid: top left, top center, top right, bottom left, bottom center, and bottom right. The default is bottom center.
Which number formats are available?
Four formats are built in: 1, 2, 3; 01, 02, 03; 001, 002, 003; and Page 1, Page 2. You can also add a prefix and suffix around any format.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Use the Start Number field to begin from any value, for example 5 to continue a series from an earlier document.
Can I adjust the size and margin of the numbers?
Yes. The Font Size control goes from 8 to 36 points, and the Margin control from 10 to 100 points, so you can keep numbers clear of the text or set them further out.
What happens when I process several PDFs at once?
Each PDF gets numbers and is saved as a separate file. If you processed more than one, they are bundled into a single ZIP download.
